Oesophageal cancer caused approximately 544,000 deaths worldwide in 2020¹

Oesophageal cancer was the seventh most common cancer in 2020, accounting for 3.1% of all new cancer cases worldwide.¹ The prevalence of Oesophageal cancers varies by histological type in different parts of the world. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common histology in Eastern Europe and Asia, while accounting for less than 30% of all Oesophageal cancers in the US and Western Europe. Meanwhile, adenocarcinoma is the most common histology in Western Europe and North America.² Patients with Oesophageal cancer typically do not present with any signs and symptoms until the cancer is more advanced. Patients who are at high risk for developing Oesophageal cancer, such as those with Barrett’s esophagus, are often monitored closely for the development of cancer. For patients diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer between 2011 and 2017, the 5-year survival rate was 46% for patients with localized disease, 26% for patients with regional disease, and 5% for patients with distant disease.³ As such, despite recent advances, advanced Oesophageal and gastrooesophageal junction (GEJ) cancers remain among the most difficult to manage in oncology, with low median survival rates and prolonged deterioration in quality of life as the diseases progress.⁴
